Star Hostel

Staying at Star Hostel in Taipei, which you can check out online here, here, and here, is like breathing a sigh of relief. The staff members are friendly (and fluent in English), the bathroom is so clean it looks like it was built last week, and the rooms are comfy and well maintained. Though the mattress cannot be held to the same standard as those found in nice, chain hotels, the silky, plush comforters have enough of a cozy cocoon effect to make up for it.

In the common room is equipped with IKEA-style furniture pieces clustered in groups so that you can dine at the wooden breakfast table, lounge on the couches, or sip tea in the armchairs with your friends. Though unadorned in style, the common room has pops of color, added by the light blue accent wall or the potted plants lining the window sills, that make it feel welcoming and warm. On the other side of the service desk from the common room is the kitchen, fully equipped (and clean) and buzzing at breakfast time. Tea, coffee, toast, jam, and fruit are all available in the mornings before 10am. Just don't forget to wash your own dishes when you are done eating!

Based on its service, comfort, and location (only 1 stop by metro or a 10-15 minute walk from Taipei Main Station), I would highly recommend this hostel for a budget-oriented or youth traveler.
