Pashminas and Paprika

Not too far from one of Istanbul's main streets lies the entrance to the Grand Bazaar. Enter through the gates and, after twisting through a few narrow stone alleyways, you will find yourself in a vast mecca of silken pashminas that glow with color, wooden backgammon sets inlaid with mother of pearl, and little hand painted boxes that can hold precious goods or just nothing at all.

The Spice Bazaar, though not as large as the Grand Bazaar, still overwhelms the senses. Mounds of spices entice you at every turn, especially since paprika, Turkish saffron, white pepper, and many others are sold for less than half the price of their US store-bought equivalents. Various teas, too, join forces with the spices to make for colorful, elegant displays.

Those travelers with a sweet tooth will not be disappointed, either. Honey and jams glow from glass displays and the powered sugar from the Turkish Delight does nothing to stave off desire.
