Hotel Jägerhorn Makes Zagreb Feel Like Home

We stayed at the Hotel Jägerhorn twice--once upon arrival in Croatia, and once again prior to departure as bookends to our trip.

Three friendly staff members took the time to get to know us, sharing their advice about things to do and places to eat, bantering about this and that. When we came back for our second stay after nine days in other parts of the country, staff said they remembered us ("How has it gone by so quickly!"), welcoming us back with open arms and calling us by name.

Off a main street and through a cute alley lined with boutiques, the hotel itself is situated along a hill. Don't mind the steps, it's all worth it. Climb the first set and you'll be at the main entrance; climb a bit farther and you'll reach a charming breakfast location. If your lungs and knees will allow (and you decide to forgo the cable car) the steepest set of stairs at the tail end of the hotel will put you right on the border of old town--and only a few minutes from the world famous Museum of Broken Relationships. The location could not have been better.

Traveling as a family of three in Europe proves difficult when it comes to finding appropriate accommodation. Many hotels only have one bed per room, and they'll often charge extra (or simply not allow) a roll away bed. For our first night at the Hotel Jägerhorn we booked two separate rooms across the hall from one another. The second time around we secured a suite on the second floor, which included a single bed, day bed, TV, and chairs in the front entry room; then a double bed, desk, and wardrobe in the main sleeping quarters in the room beyond. Both parts had a separate entrance to the single bathroom, which was more spacious than others we'd seen.

I might concede that the beds in the hotel aren't as plush as Americans might be used to from 3-4 star international chains, but overall the accommodation was really quite perfect. And if the great location and comfortable, well decorate sleeping arrangements aren't enough, just try their breakfast! European-style cut meats with cheeses make any breakfast seem classy. But take your tea (or coffee) on the veranda with a light waterfall in the background, and the taste is elevated to another level.

We were sad to say goodbye to this hotel--both times.
